Senior Project
The Senior Project is an independent project that students begin at the end of their Junior year, and complete in their Senior year at Helix Charter High School. The project has three components.
The first is the 20-hour independent project. The student chooses an area of interest, and drafts a proposal at the end of Junior year. Once the proposal is approved, the student  then independently completes the project some time between the summer before Senior year and March of Senior year. During the project, the student creates a portfolio, and in April, the student will go before a panel of judges, made up of teachers and community members, who will review the portfolio and interview the student on his/her project. This phase of the project completion is called Senior Defense.
The second component of the project is the Senior Research Paper, which is completed in the student's English class. The paper must be 6-8 pages long, use a minimum of 8 sources, and is on a topic related to a culminating experience at Helix Charter High School. The student must earn a minimum score of 70 to pass the paper.
The third component of the project is the Boards Presentation, which will be completed in May. The student will create a speech that is reflective of the students' 4 years of high school and includes: the process of the project and the learning that occurred during the completion of the project, a description of the research paper, a discussion of the growth that the student has experienced the last four years, and the student's future goals. The speech must be between 8-11 minutes long. Students will have an opportunity to practice their speeches in advisory, and then present to a panel of judges consisting of teachers and community members. The student must pass the speech with a 70 or higher.

Juniors- Proposal Approval
Class of 2015,
33 Juniors have already been approved for their Senior Projects!
347 Juniors are in the process of working on their proposals.
200 Juniors have not submitted yet.

Please be working to get your Senior Project Proposal approved! The sooner you get approved, the less stressful this process will be for you.

Mrs. Merideth has returned from Materinity Leave, so you will work with her again to get approved.

To submit, give your proposal to your Advisor teacher on Wednesday. Or, you can bring it directly to Mrs. Merideth in room 70.
If you are revising, please remember to highlight your changes and attach the revised proposal to the original one (and any other revisions done before the current one).

Our goal is to have more than 100 students approved before the end of the school year. Please email Mrs. Passmore or Mrs. Merideth with any questions.

Interested in judging Senior Defense or Senior Boards?
Part of what makes the Senior Project a unique experience is that members from our community come to Helix to participate in the judging of Senior Defense and Boards. We would love for you to join the judging "team" and be involved for as much or as little time as you can spare on the Defense and Board dates.
This year, Senior Defense will take place in April- the dates are still undetermined.
Senior Boards will take place on May 27 and 28, from 12pm-4pm.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact Jennifer Osborn at: josborn@helixcharter.net

We look forward to having you involved!
