Senior Project
The Senior Project is an independent project that students begin at the end of their Junior year, and complete in their Senior year at Helix Charter High School. The project has three components.
The first is the 20-hour independent project. The student chooses an area of interest, and drafts a proposal at the end of Junior year. Once the proposal is approved, the student  then independently completes the project some time between the summer before Senior year and March of Senior year. During the project, the student creates a portfolio, and in April, the student will go before a panel of judges, made up of teachers and community members, who will review the portfolio and interview the student on his/her project. This phase of the project completion is called Senior Defense.
The second component of the project is the Senior Research Paper, which is completed in the student's English class. The paper must be 6-8 pages long, use a minimum of 8 sources, and is on a topic related to a culminating experience at Helix Charter High School. The student must earn a minimum score of 70 to pass the paper.
The third component of the project is the Boards Presentation, which will be completed in May. The student will create a speech that describes the process of the project, the link between the project and the paper, the significant learning that occurred during the project, and the student's future goals. The speech must be between 8-10 minutes long. Students will have an opportunity to practice their speeches in advisory, and then present to a panel of judges consisting of teachers and community members. The student must pass the speech with a 70 or higher.

Class of 2013
Welcome to the Senior Project Website! You should become very familiar with the links and documents available on this site, as it provides EVERYTHING you will need to be successful at completing your Senior Project.
Please make sure you are attending Advisory weekly, as your Advisor will be going over important handouts and walking you through the process of drafting your Senior Project Proposal, the first step in completing your project.
At this point, you need to be accessing the "Juniors" folder, as it contains all the materials that are presented weekly in Advisory. Please do NOT use the "Senior Project Proposal" folder, as it contains information and dates for CURRENT Seniors. Aside from the "Juniors" folder, you should also reference the "Suggested Documentation" folder- this has directions that are SPECIFIC to each type of project.
If you have any questions, please email me or stop by my office (140A) on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday during 3rd period, lunch, or 4th period.

Interested in judging Senior Defense or Senior Boards?
Part of what makes the Senior Project a unique experience is that members from our community come to Helix to participate in the judging of Senior Defense and Boards. We would love for you to join the judging "team" and be involved for as much or as little time as you can spare on the Defense and Board dates.
This year, Senior Defense will take place in April, though the dates are not yet set.
Senior Boards will take place on May 29 and 30, from 12pm-4pm.

If you are interested in being involved, please contact Jennifer Osborn at :josborn@helixcharter.net

We look forward to having you involved!
Christine Passmore
